I thought the worldwide known Academy’s ceremony would be a great place to find inspiring speeches by those who master the art of communication. As a matter of fact I was, sadly, wrong. Not only the speeches were poorly delivered, but also the guests weren’t passionate about what they were saying, at all.

I only have two exceptions: Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong’o. Both awarded on the Best Supporting Actor and Actress category.

People in social media are talking all about it. What is it they share that makes them effective speeches?

– They know who their audience is. Not the people who are in that room right then, but also those who made possible for both actors to be standing there. They show respect for the roles they played by showing it to the real people they were inspired by.

They aren’t afraid to be emotional, showing their feelings or even getting personal. Jared tells the story of his own mother and Lupita bursts into tears.

– Both use meaningful words like “dreams” or “dreamers”. Jared Leto goes with this powerful sentence as well: “To those of you out there who ever felt unjustice because of who you are or who you love”. Lupita chooses to say the most powerful sentence of all at the beginning of her speech: “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone elses’ ”
